Hiking in Mammoth Lakes, CA

Mammoth Lakes hiking trails

From spring to fall, hiking in the Mammoth Lakes area offers spectacular changing scenery and mild temperatures. Just as the snow begins to melt and lakes start to thaw, visitors from all over the world come to this mountain sanctuary to experience the unique wonder of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Yosemite National Park generally opens in May for Memorial Day weekend and it is at this time that the valley is at its most beautiful, with full flowing waterfalls, blooming flowers, and snow-capped mountain peaks.

Summer and fall are also ideal times to experience Mammoth Lakes’ natural splendor at an eye-level hiking pace. You are certain to see a menagerie of wildlife during this time of year, from hawks swooping and grouse scuttling by, to lizards basking in the warm sun.

Backpacking through this picturesque landscape is an unforgettable experience, but take note, wilderness permits are required for overnight camping. Come well prepared with proper hiking boots and plenty of water, keep an eye on the weather, and most of all, don’t forget your camera.
